When is the best time to go on holiday to Italy?

Italy is one of those places where you really can visit at any time of year. There is always something exciting to see in any month of the year, so it really depends on the type of holiday you want to experience.

Here is a guide to what you can expect at different times of year so you can make a more informed decision.

Visiting Italy in the summer
The summer is the busiest time of year nearly everywhere in Italy, as well as the hottest. However, prices of hotels can be surprising well-priced in the summer months of July and August. So if you get a holiday booked up early you will likely find package deals for July and August are much more reasonable than you might think.

The summer is high season, and as a result you will find a lot more tourists here than at other times of the year. This can mean the top attractions in cities across the country get very crowded, which may not be ideal.

What about the winter?
With the exception of the ski resorts, winter is the low season in Italy, and it can get  cold in the north of the country. You can check the average temperatures for various destinations at the Met Office website to help with your planning.

Some hotels may be closed, especially in seaside resort, but not so much in the cities. Some restaurants may close for a few weeks to take a holiday, and this is not the time to go to beach towns where most things will shut down.

In some areas, it may rain or even snow in the winter. In the south of the country, the weather is usually mild, and it does not go much lower than 10 °C on average.

However, winter could be the perfect time for a city break when you can enjoy some sightseeing with fewer tourists to share the attractions with, and you may be able to get lower rates at hotels.

The best times to visit
Weather wise, the best times to visit Italy are during the spring and autumn, and these are the most popular times that we arrange holidays at Family Holidays Italy.

This is usually from April to June, or from September to October. At this time of the year, the temperature is comfortable rather than too hot, and there are smaller crowds than during the summer. However, prices are at there highest during these months so to get a bargain and still get the sunshine consider the months of March, July, August and November.

Whether you want to bask on the beach in the summer sun, or explore the world-class attractions without as many tourists during the winter, you will enjoy a fantastic time in Italy at any time of year.
